Resolution in Support of Mumia Abu-Jamal

International Communist Seminar, Brussels, 2 – 4 May 2000

Whereas, Mumia Abu-Jamal is a political prisoner in the United States and is currently facing execution at the hands of U.S. imperialism,

and Whereas, Mumia is a renowned Afro-American journalist, freedom fighter against police brutality and has become known as the "voice of the voiceless",

and Whereas, Mumia Abu-Jamal was railroaded to prison and death row in 1981 by the U.S. repressive state apparatus for the alleged murder of a policeman,

and Whereas, the trial of Mumia violated all semblance of justice and fair play - witnesses disappeared or were coerced, witness testimony was fabricated, Mumia was denied the right to defend himself and the court appointed an incompetent "defence" attorney, money was not provided for ballistic tests and for other aspects of his defence and the presiding judge was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and infamous for sentencing more prisoners to death row than any judge in the USA,

and Whereas, Mumia continues to be an internationalist freedom fighter even from death row and solitary confinement exemplified by his courageous and principled stand against the U.S. imperialist led NATO bombing of Yugoslavia,

and Whereas, the Afro-American national liberation struggle is a vital component of the world-wide liberation struggles of the oppressed peoples against imperialism, headed by U.S. imperialism,

and Whereas, the struggle to free Mumia Abu-Jamal is an important pad of the struggle against police brutality in the USA and for Afro-American liberation and world socialism, therefore ...

...Be it Resolved that the ICS gathered here in Brussels over May Day 2000 demand justice for Mumia Abu-Jamal and specifically demand that the U.S. imperialist repressive state apparatus immediately halt the pending execution of freedom-fighter Mumia Abu-Jamal and,

...Be It Further Resolved that the many parties and organizations gathered here at the ICS work in our respective countries to free Mumia Abu-Jamal as part of our proletarian internationalist responsibilities to advance the cause of national liberation and socialism.
